If the time has come to put a new roof on your home, consider a premium grade of asphalt shingles called “architectural” shingles. What’s the difference between regular shingles and architectural shingles? Architectural shingles are a premium grade of asphalt shingle roofing that are thicker than standard shingles, giving them a more distinctive, textured appearance.

Also referred to as dimensional or laminate shingles, architectural shingles first came on the scene in the 1970s, introduced by manufacturers who were looking to create a more durable, higher-end product for residential and commercial consumers.

Regular Roof Shingles vs. Architectural Shingles

Regular roof shingles, known as 3-tab due to their three tabs/flaps, have a ¼-inch groove between each tab. They appear in flat, even rows, as opposed to the layered, textured look of architectural shingles. Regular asphalt shingles last up to 20 years; but architectural shingles can deliver a service life of up to 30 or 40 years.

Architectural shingles also give you more variety when it comes to patterns and colors. They resist the wind and harsh weather better than standard shingles because they feature a heavier granule covering.

You will pay slightly more initially for architectural shingles. However, you will likely enjoy a 50 percent longer lifespan, with a strong warranty to back it up.

Standard 3-tab asphalt shingles have a single layer of material placed on top of a cloth or fiberglass mat, which means they are more susceptible to deterioration and damage from wind, hail and other forms of severe weather. In comparison, architectural shingles comprise multiple layers of refined asphalt and granules, which are laminated together. Due to this sturdier composition, they bring a much higher wind resistance than standard shingles, with some able to withstand up to 120 mph winds. Keep in mind, standard shingles can only resist 60 to 80 mph winds.

This, in turn, will save you money on repairs and replacement over the life of your roof. Because of all these extra protections and benefits, some home insurance companies offer discounts on your insurance premiums when you install architectural shingles.
